Reverend J.J. Vicars: Bio

J.J. Vicars tore outta the Sci-Fi Diner in a '59 Cadillac with mounted steerhorns and backward flames, immaculately dressed and well coiffed.

After getting his Blues & Jazz start in Houston on drums then guitar he traveled to Japan for an extended engagement that saw him dabbling in Latin, Soul, Pop, Country and Psychedelia.

Settling in Ohio for a spell he led several BluesRock trios, played bass on one album with Indianapolis Rock singer Ron Brewer, then bass again with his dad's Cincinnati based Jump Blues outfit Jerry & the Hipswingers.

Next he parked out in Austin teaming up with Todd Moore in C Rex while gigging in various Blues bands. He later cut his solo debut SCI-FI DINER with J.J. Barrera (bass) and Mike Buck (drums).

Following that J.J. spent a brief time in Phoenix, AZ where he cut The Hillbilly Resistance with songwriter Michael James Klunk (vocals, acoustic guitar) recorded by Michigan Mike Horning (doghouse bass). Then he was off to Vegas alternating between a local Garage Rock and his own stint at The Sand Dollar.

In 2003 he returned to Tokyo where he maintains his residence and set up his own label, Annie Gator Records. After re-releasing SCI-FI DINER as a full length album with 5 new tracks he recorded and released HI-TECH HILLBILLY (his earliest songs from the first Tokyo stint) HEARTLAND (a hard rocking platter from his time in Indiana) and LONGHAIRED LEFTOVERS (extra material recorded at his home studio).

His fourth album LONG WAY FROM HOME was begun in late 2008. After a personnel change it was put on the backburner and LEFTOVERS was released instead. During a trip back to the U.S. in 2010 he discovered some Mike Klunk demos that the Hillbilly Resistance had never recorded and began working on them with Michigan Mike. He also dig up a half dozen of his own tunes that will be released as another 'leftover albums'.

After LONG WAY FROM HOME is completed there is another Roots Rock album FULL THROTTLE followed by an all instrumental album PICKIN' & GRINNIN'.

When not working on his own music or works-for-hire at his home studio J.J.V. is also a writer. He wrote the definitive story of vocalist Jill Jones (used in her promo), has contributed music related articles for several magazines, and his currently working on two books, a documentary of Austin's Roots Rock scene and a semi-fictional adventure.
