The Reverend Double J: Music

Pickin' & Grinnin'

(Don Leady & J.J. Vicars)
April 17, 2008
Written and arranged by Don Leady
I started listening to the Tailgators when I was 15 and counted Don Leady among my favorite guitarists. SWAMP ROCK was one of the records I initially learned to play from. When I was living in Austin in 2001 I looked him up and caught every gig I could while soaking up his Jazz/Western Swing album ALAMO SUITE. When I moved away I stayed in touch. He was -and still is- one of favorite guitarists but after having gotten to know him he also became one of my favorite people.

While visiting Texas in April 2008 I hit him up for a guitar lesson and he suggested we record a little something together. Twenty years ago I blasting the Tailgators from my stereo and now I'm recording with Don. Way too cool.

Don starts off with the boogie bassline and I'm playing the Lightnin' Hopkins type riff. He takes most of the lead and I get a few licks in halfway through. He even plays one of his trademark riffs from GUITAR BOOGIE SHUFFLE. For guitars he played his Les Paul Jr. styled PRS and I played his Telecaster he used on SWAMP'S UP. Don overdubbed the bass part with a Danolectro that he played with his thumb and turned to me and said, "Hey, kinda sounds like Keith [Ferguson]." And yes, he did show me a few things that I'll be practicing for some time to come. If you don't have any Tailgators or Alamo Suite do yourself a favor and pick some up!
